Krav Maga Edinburgh is a fantastic place to learn effective self-defence skills and get fit. Below are just some of the comments from our students...

During our training blocks we like to have something non-cricket going on which we can use as a conditioning session and which has potential for good transfer into our sport. There’s a lot about boxing that can translate into various cricket skills – balance, reactions, speed, delivery of ‘punch’, being fast and powerful from a stable position, weight transfer and footwork. The moment I met Marcus and saw his facility at Combat Ready, I knew we were onto a winner. Marcus has a great coaching manner and the lads loved every minute of our six-week programme in preparation for the World T20. Marcus and Combat Ready are proof that hard work can still be a lot of fun!

I strongly recommend women's self-defence training with Marcus Houston. I have been attacked twice and attending a one-on-one training in self-defence manoeuvres could have been quite stressful and unpleasant. Marcus, however, was very patient, calm, and sensitive to unpleasant memories being stirred up. We started with separate moves and built up to strings of moves and strategies for self-protection, imagining various scenarios. We also revisted my previous attack experiences and I learned new ways of responding even in situations that had felt hopeless. I now feel empowered to take care of myself as much as possible in situations of threat. Essentially, Marcus communicates respect toward women and a genuine desire to equip women to take care of themselves. My hope is that more and more women young and old have the opportunity to learn self-defense skills from Marcus for their own personal security, confidence, and safety, as well as to reduce the number of injuries and worse suffered by women from every walk of life.

Marcus really went the extra mile for me, putting together a totally customised proramme that built in not just what I needed for the project I was working on, but fitness training, practical tips and ungodly early morning starts. A great experience all round and one I'd recommend to anyone looking for confidence and conditioning.

Thank you to you and Amy for coming out to Dollar Academy last month. The pupils really enjoyed their sessions with you and are all saying that they feel much more confident now when out and about. Thank you for making the sessions fun for them, the feedback from the pupils in all years has been really positive.

“Marcus brings a solid foundation of functional skills to the training floor, he will be a great asset to anyone who is seeking technical skills from a balanced and extremely functional self defense instructor."

Marcus Houston is the first ( and currently only) person to whom I have awarded instructor status in my Tactical Edge system! Marcus was also my first Tactical Edge student, having started in the military system and transitioned into the expanded civilian system.

Marcus has a wide range of experience in the martial arts, and a refreshingly open mind to new methods and tactics. Marcus is an extremely skilled and able practitioner, and an enthusiastic instructor who wants his students to have access to the highest standard of technique and instruction. Many instructors are happy to just offer their students what knowledge they already possess with very little room for continued development, where-as Marcus is always looking for new ways to boost his students abilities and effectiveness- giving them access to new fitness methods such as Russian Kettlebells, and bringing in instructors to performs classes and seminars.

There are many instructors in and around Edinburgh who claim to offer self defence training, but as far as I have seen most of them basically teach MMA, Kickboxing, Traditional Martial Arts or Filipino Arts & call it 'Reality Based'. Marcus is one of the few instructors around who concentrates on realistic situational training against the sort of opponents & situations realistically encountered in modern society. If you are seriously wanting to learn personal protection I have no hesitation in recommending Marcus Houston's classes.

I've been around martial arts and self defense, in one form or another, for over 20 years. During that time I've been privileged enough to train with some fantastic instructors. I add Marcus Houston to that list with complete confidence. If you want to know what works - train with Marcus.

Marcus is an exceptional instructor, instilling students with the highest level of practical skill and confidence. You cannot help but leave a class feeling better prepared than when you went in. His teaching is clear and precise and his classes provide ample time for participants to really understand the skills they are acquiring. He is also that rare thing, a teacher who performs at the highest level.
There are many coaches who choose to rest on past achievements. Marcus on the other hand seems to revel in adding to his knowledge base and in the best sense "absorbs what is useful". This non-dogmatic approach is as rare as it is refreshing.

Also, don't underestimate the "fun" element. Marcus encourages people to play with their new skills. No fighting by numbers here!

Young, old, male, female, experienced or a "newbie", I can't think of a better environment in which to get out of the "comfort zone".

Marcus' commitment to learn and develop efficient self-defense techniques seems obvious, as does his enthusiasm for transferring this to his classes. I've been attending for a year and classes have always been welcoming and filled with people willing to help each other learn.

I've trained at Krav Maga Edinburgh since September 2007, and in that time have found Marcus to be a thorough, patient, and conscientious instructor. He's sincerely dedicated to teaching what he knows to others, and highly responsive to what his students want and what they hope to get out of their training. He keeps classes varied and challenging, and in addition to regular instruction has arranged a number of interesting seminars in just the last few months. The club is informal and the atmosphere is welcoming, and I've really enjoyed having the opportunity to train there.

Going to the classes has been a great way of boosting my personal confidence and feel I am developing practical self defence skills. Whatever your strength and fitness levels, it does not effect your ability to develop your defence skills. The classes give everyone the opportunity to train against people of all abilities allowing skills to be shared continuously.

I have been practicing Krav Maga for the last year and find it that it takes a no-nonsense approach to self-defence and safety in general. All the techniques we practice could be applied in real life one day, if the need arose. Training at KM Edinburgh has proved to be informative, enjoyable and fun. The level and style of instruction from Marcus, the Chief Instructor, is ideal for any level of student. Each class is always different, providing an innovative atmosphere, and their is a huge amount of enthusiasm from the teacher and students. Classes are conducted in a serious, but friendly atmosphere and I would definitely recommend anyone, regardless of age, gender or social/ professional background to consider taking up Krav Maga as a form of self-defence and fitness training.

Marcus provides a relaxed and friendly environment for private training sessions. He uses the syllabus from his regular club classes as a guide and also provides the flexibility to respond and adapt to my own personal martial arts interests teaching the best parts from krav maga, kick boxing and other less well known martial arts and combat systems. The sessions are always well thought out and the training is delivered very clearly with fun and humour thrown in. I would really recommend these sessions on their own to develop very effective self-defence techniques or to super charge any regular martial arts training.

What can I say about Tactical Edge - it will totally revolutionise the way you think about self defence. The expert tuition from both Marcus Houston and Mark Davies is invaluable to anyone at any stage in their self development and will blow you away. It’s worth pointing out that Tactical Edge does not cater for prima donnas or bullsh*tters its the real deal in self defence and respect is always given to all students at whatever level in their development. If you want to improve your game or indeed start on the road to self defence, Tactical Edge is something I highly recommend

I have recently started training in Krav Maga under Marcus's tuition and have no previous martial arts experience. There are a lot of clubs in the area offering instruction in a large variety of disciplines. As a novice, my decision to go with Marcus's classes was based on the professional layout of the website and the testimonials already given therein. It was immediately apparent from my first training session that everything I had read was entirely justified. I wanted to begin training in a martial art primarily as a form of fitness training that would also provide a higher level of mental engagement and commitment compared with other sports. I was also looking for something that would allow me to switch off completely from a demanding job and reduce my stress levels. Furthermore, I wanted to choose a martial art that would be practically applicable as a self-defence technique. Marcus's Krav Maga classes have fulfilled all of these expectations. I have been extremely impressed by his tuition and would recommend the classes to anybody with no reservations whatsoever. As an instructor, the obvious prerequisite of a high level of expertise is matched by his friendly and unassuming manner and a reassuringly constructive attention to detail. The strongest recommendation I can probably give is that I would attend every class if I could. For anybody else like me with no previous experience, starting up is probably the hardest thing to do. Having started, I now wish I had done so ten years ago. There are many benefits to martial arts training beyond learning self-defence techniques, in terms of fitness, confidence in general, mental well-being and sharpness, and most importantly, simple enjoyment. Marcus's classes provide all of these and I would wholeheartedly encourage you to sign up and find out for yourself.

Since starting my Tactical Edge training with Marcus Houston in 2007 I have found it to be the best self defence system I have come across and Marcus to be one of the best instructors that I have trained under.

As an instructor he has a deep understanding of the system he is teaching and is always bringing something new to the class by constantly developing the techniques in which we train so that they are the best they can be and
unlike most martial arts can be applied effectively in a real life situation.

I would highly recommend KM Edinburgh and Marcus to anyone interested in learning how to defend themselves and their loved ones properly. Or if you're simply interested in learning something new that actually works in the
real world then this is definitely the club for you.

I started training with Marcus several months ago. The kettlebell training is fantastic and great fun, a powerful workout great for all the wobbly bits that us women struggle with! Bingo wings are obsolete after a few weeks! I’ve been involved with Martial Arts for several years and the class allows me to enjoy something new and also combine previous Martial Arts skills. No matter what your fitness level is or experience, each person can suit the training to their own ability. The self defence part of the class is very useful and practical – combining speed with skill. Additionally, the class is short so suits everyone, you train hard quickly and get out so it can suit all lifestyles. The trainers are fantastic too, any questions or difficulty with any part of the class and they are very patient which gives the whole class confidence.

I attended the Women’s Conditioning and Self Defence class at Krav Maga Edinburgh for the first time in November last year as I wanted to learn self defence skills. I went to my first class as a complete beginner with no previous training or experience in self defence and I was instantly hooked. After 4 months I am still really enjoying the classes. They’re always a lot of fun and offer plenty of variety by covering both fitness conditioning and self defence. The instructors are very supportive, helpful and are excellent at demonstrating new techniques. They can easily cater for any level of fitness and experience.

I highly recommend the Women’s Conditioning and Self Defence class to any woman wishing to improve fitness levels and gain useful self defence skills. I have seen positive improvements since commencing with these classes as not only have I learnt valuable self defence techniques but my fitness levels have improved greatly and I am feeling much more toned as a result.

I started krav maga in Sep. 2008 when my brother suggested trying something outside my comfort zone and just going for it. In this time I’ve seen how it is that people who do krav are so fond of it and respect it so much. I see how it has the potential to change you by making you fitter, stronger and faster. It will develop your endurance and co-ordination. You will most certainly tone up and lose weight fast. I myself have gone down 4 trouser sizes.

You will leave your class with a big high that will last for days BUT the most beneficial thing of all is that you will learn how to protect yourself against people trying to harm you or take your life.

The moves you are taught become instinctive and when you see yourself actually being able to defend yourself against an attacker by blocking, attacking, taking down and disarming or even by avoidance you will gain confidence and get a bit of self-esteem into the bargain. What could be more invaluable than that?

I had had absolutely no experience in any martial art, boxing or combat before I took up krav and I have to say that the instructors Marcus, Lee and Rannoch are guys you will respect for their professionalism, support, encouragement and drive.

They make each week challenging and exciting and also bring professional instructors from outside for additional and inspirational training.  The thing to note, and this is important, is that although you will be pushed to develop yourself and achieve standards (there is a clear progression) you will not in any way be made to feel intimidated or be put off and then give up. The club should be respected in equal parts for support and encouragement, achievement and grading, getting you fit and giving you the opportunity to train up into a fighter

I started training with Krav Maga Edinburgh in March 2008,I had tried some traditional arts and alough I found
the training and conditioning to be good I really felt there was a massive gap between Dojo fighting, sparring, kata, etc and
actual confrontation.

I then started to look for a more 'no nonsense' approach to the Martial systems and quickly came across Krav Maga which  lead me to Marcus Houston and Krav Maga Edinburgh.

Marcus really makes the effort to welcome 'newbies' and I found the classes easy to get into. One of the main difference's I found with Marcus oppose to other instructors is he encourages you pursue your own path,a lot of my past instructors thought there particular style was superior to others but Marcus emphasises how each strike, block, movement,
takedown can be adapted to different style, situation, opponent and how having previous experience integrates into your current training.

The club also has 'Big' Lee and Rannoch Donald of kettlebells Scotland to get you into shape,I had never heard of kettlebell training
until I met Rannoch but its hands down the best way to train for combat, every movement mimics fighting and really helps you to
focus on your body mechanics.

Krav Maga Edinburgh have a fantastic team to instruct you and a great bunch of guys to train with, and there's not a ego insight
which is rare.

II have spent three months in Edinburgh to improve my English, when I discovered my interests for combat sports. Through a friend, who already practised Krav Maga at my home in Switzerland I heard about „Krav Maga Edinburgh“. So I decided to have a glance at a lesson and went there on a Thursday to attend the women’s class. Of course I was a bit nervous, because I didn’t know anybody, had never practised a combat sport before and on the top of that I was concerned not to understand everything, but there was absolutely no reason to worry about these things. I experienced a very warm and uncomplicated welcome and could immediately and without any complicated application practise the class. I really liked the good mixture between some fitness exercises and self defence techniques. However, I never felt uncomfortable, everybody was really friendly, and Lee took his time to go round and gave tips how to improve. I really enjoyed this class and there was no doubt that I m going to be back for other classes.

Therefore I went back there to attend the regular classes as well and it was a good decision. Training with the guys was surely bit more of a challenge, but also a great chance to learn. I never had the feeling of being overstrained or not welcome. Far from it! I really felt comfortable there and regretted it when I had to go back home.

Attending the classes was a great experience and I can highly recommend this place. Thanks again to everybody!

Before I started training with Combat Ready I had a fairly strong opinion of what takes place in combat training. I assumed it would be heavily disciplined with a structure I wouldn’t understand, and a required level of fitness I wouldn’t match up to. So, the first time I came to a session, I was fairly apprehensive about what would happen. After a couple of minutes it was pretty obvious I’d watched too many kung fu films.

Marcus and Lee (the instructors) made a point of making me feel welcome the second I stepped through the door, as did several of the regular students. A glance round the room instantly dismissed my assumption that this kind of training is exclusively for elite athletes, the class was made up of women and men of all ages, sizes and levels of fitness.

The training itself is great. It sounds clichéd but you really feel like you’ve learned something after the first lesson. In the year I trained with them before leaving Edinburgh, I don’t remember ever finding a lesson boring or repetitive. If you’re going to learn a form of self defence it needs to be easy to use, based on real life scenarios and interesting enough to keep you coming back, which is exactly what Combat Ready delivers.

So, it’s effective, quick to learn, great for improving your fitness, and it genuinely makes you feel more confident. As the first lesson is free, there’s no reason not to try it.

Hi Folks

I just want to thank you for the last six weeks with Krav Maga Edinburgh. It was a great pleasure to work with you guys and I really enjoyed it. I will take some of the Tactical Edge techniques I learned to Zurich an show them to my students. Generally, I was impressed at how motivated you are in all of the classes I visited. Not to say that we are lax in Zurich, but you all work single-mindedly and are serious to be as good as it gets. Finally, I want to thank you all, especially Marcus, Lee and Mark Davies for the interesting time. If someday one of you guys come to Zurich, don‘t forget your groin guard/mouth guard. Let me know and come and join ‘my‘ class!

Take care and keep on working - the more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle...

I just started taking the ladies only self defence class in January and was immediately hooked.  The class is a great blend of strength conditioning and pad work, ensuring sure that not only do we learn krav maga sparring moves but that we have the strength to do them.  The class has a great atmosphere; all the women are friendly and encouraging, and Lee is an excellent teacher, pushing just hard enough.  The moves of krav maga have been tempered to suit a self defence style that is friendlier (and possible more relevant) to women, focusing on repelling and escaping attackers as well as the more general punching and kicking moves.   The class is high energy and fun, and is a fantastic workout and a good stress-reliever.   The kettlebells used for strength training will transform the skinniest of arms, and the krav maga moves taught feel as though they’ll actually work against someone.  Each class is different, with varied kettlebell and cardio routines and something different taught with the pads each week.  This keeps the class exciting and ensures that while you may be watching the clock to see how much longer you have to swing a 12 kg iron ball, it won’t be because you’re bored.  The confidence inspired by the skills learned in the class is priceless, after just one class I was walking with more self-assurance than I had in a long time.  Krav Maga Edinburgh is a great way to learn the ability of self defence in a friendly environment; you will come away better able to protect yourself, stronger and more confident regardless of your age, sex or sport level.

Before starting at Combat Ready I had tried a few martial arts, such as Judo and Muay-Thai, but I found them formulaic and very dependent upon skill sets which seemed impractical for real life violence. In contrast Combat Ready offered a no-nonsense, practical and, above all, interesting approach to reality based self defense.  Crucially, at Combat Ready, whether you train in Krav Maga, Tactical Edge or NSI, you are encouraged to find your own approach to self-defense, to take what these systems teach, and to make it work for you. All the instructors at Combat Ready are experienced, skilled and supportive, and every lesson is approached differently, I guarantee that you will never be bored.

The physical training at Combat Ready is also top-notch, and as a consequence my fitness has never been better. From kettlebells, to circuit training, to pylometrics, Combat Ready provides all the key fitness concepts that exercise magazines constantly emphasize the benefits of. Regardless of your personal goal; weight-loss, fitness, or training for an event, Combat Ready is an excellent venue to help you achieve your aim.

As to the system's real-life effectiveness, through the course of my work I have had to deal with many violent, or near-violent, encounters most of which were nowhere near as straight forward as the one-on-one showdowns most martial arts prepare you for. In these confrontations, I have, time and time again, applied the lessons that I have learned at Combat Ready, and I can attest to their value.

Combat Ready is an excellent gym offering a top-class training facility, dedicated instructors, and superb fitness and self-defense. I can't recommend it more.

Given my profession, I approached the Combat Ready gym with specific requirements to which Marcus responded by creating a tailored and holistic training programme that best suited my availability. As an instructor, Marcus was dedicated, hardworking and meticulous in his tuition and despite my limited time frame my skill set was vastly improved due to the practical application and relevance to real life situations. In addition, physical fitness and general well-being were also taken into account with a variety of challenging yet achievable conditioning and circuit classes. I found the environment to be very friendly and inviting and with the wealth of experience and knowledge on offer I would definitely recommend the Combat Ready gym as the first, and last, port of call for self defence and combat conditioning needs.

About eight months ago I started training at Combat Ready. Having never done any form of self defence before I didn’t really know what to expect, so I arranged a private session with Marcus Houston, the Chief Instructor. Marcus was welcoming and patient, taking me through basic stances and movements whilst showing me a variety of combinations. He also showed me techniques that I could adapt and utilise in my job on a day-to-day basis. These have been a real benefit. I joined the Krav Maga group class the next day.

Marcus’s teaching style encourages you to think for yourself and adapt your own style to the situation that presents itself. The environment in which you learn is relaxed and practical where the classes focus on ‘reality based’ scenarios. His classes encompass all levels of abilities so you also find yourself learning from other students and developing your own skills and confidence along the way which motivates you to learn more. I have since joined kettle bells, N.S.I and kickboxing classes.

Marcus and his team at KM Edinburgh get my highest recommendation. If you’re looking for practical ways to protect yourself or just looking to get fit then this is the place to be. I can guarantee you won’t regret it

Following a recent incident when I felt highly threatened I decided that I needed to learn some sort of self defence techique and thought kickboxing sounded
like something I would enjoy.

I decided to have a personal training session first as I wasnt sure what my fitness level was after having 2 children and also because I had never done any
combat training before so lacked confidence and knowledge.

The session gave me a huge boost making me realise that we all have the natural instinct to defend ourselves, which can be brought out easily with the right
guidance and instruction. I absolutely loved the session which included drawing on Marcus's knowledge of personal safety measures and self defence techniques.
So I punched and kicked a guy (via pads) for the first time in my life - very liberating!

I know that I am only scratching the surface but I am well on the way to increasing my own personal safety, confidence and fitness.

I now feel ready to slot into the regular classes with great confidence and enthusiasm. Thanks Marcus you're a star! Star

I discovered Combat Ready from searching the internet for kickboxing classes in Edinburgh.  I was hopeful to find a workout regimen that was high impact and high intensity, and at the same time suited to my personality.

For my first Mixed Kickboxing class, I immediately found myself running, pulling, lifting, pounding, and smiling the whole time.  After the strength and fitness part, we moved onto the kickboxing side of things and the instructor, Marcus Houston, was able to give me individual attention as a beginner.  Marcus showed me how to do the various punches, as well as how to hold the focus pads properly when working with a partner.  I enjoyed his class so much that I wanted to speak with him privately for more information.

From our conversation, I had decided to try personal training sessions with Marcus because I really appreciated the one-to-one attention, the strength and fitness activities, and his ability to tailor a program to my needs.  Over time at Combat Ready, I have gone from one session, to two, and now at three personal training sessions a week.  Every session is different from the last, and activities are explosive and varied.

As a Strength and Fitness Coach, Marcus pushes you towards challenging yet attainable goals.  The best part is you see and feel results instantly.  To sum up, Combat Ready welcomes people from all walks of life to come with purpose and train hard in an ideal exercise setting.  I especially recommend their training methods for anyone looking to improve both areas of mental and physical strength.

I started at Combat Ready about 8 months ago, I sit in an office all day and at this point I had done no exercise for 18 months so had gained a few llbs – not good with weddings coming up!

I decided it was time to get moving and knew I needed a class scenario with someone keeping me motivated as I’m lazy if left on my own in a gym.  A friend recommended a Kettle Bell class he attended at Combat Ready so off I went, got a full on workout, was utterly knackered by the end of it but went back the next week and have being going back ever since.  I have also added the Kickboxing  classes into my weekly schedule and am very happy to report I have toned up and lost the extra llbs I had gained + a few extra!

It’s always a bit daunting attending a class where you don’t know anyone, but the instructors are encouraging, answer any questions and will point you in the right direction if you are going wrong, plus there is always a bit of banter bouncing around between the instructors and the class so it’s a good atmosphere where nobody takes themselves too seriously, it’s fun, effective and gets the required results!

I had the opportunity to train with Krav Maga Edinburgh on a break from research work in regional Bosnia where routine and consistency are sometimes hard to maintain and proper facilities difficult to come by.  In the short time I've spent with Marcus and his team of instructors at KME I have easily been re-inspired by the wealth of knowledge, the mix of training methodologies and the varied and challenging classes on offer at KME.  In as little as three weeks, I noticed general improvements in all areas of my fitness; from strength and speed to mobility, endurance and flexibility.  The timetable of complementary classes has ensured it's easy to cross-train on a daily basis and avoid the repetition and boredom that can sometimes accompany a standard gym program.

As with any regular activity, however, more often than not it's the people you train with and learn from that make the experience either the highlight of the week or just part of the daily grind.  Particularly as a woman, it's not unusual to feel intimidated at the thought of wrestling, boxing or weights training in combat sports that are often considered male-dominated.  KME has a surprisingly safe, comfortable and supportive environment; due in no small part to the  focus on encouraging each individual to develop skills as good training partners over and above their own athletic technique and form.  The emphasis on drilling basic, strong fundamentals in the group classes also makes it easy to see how women can compete or defend themselves with technique and mobility against strength or brute force.

Without hesitation, I would recommend Krav Maga Edinburgh to anyone looking to improve their fitness, learn a technical sport or self-defence, improve their competitive edge or simply to enjoy a little recreation time.  For women especially, the confidence and sense of empowerment that comes with knowing you have the skills to protect yourself is worth every last burpee, thruster, deadlift, pull-up and roundhouse kick Marcus and his accomplished crew can throw at you.  Repeatedly.

It's a great laugh and I give it ten beers out of ten!

Stag Do - Krav Maga Training and MMA session

It was dead-on... we learnt a lot, watching people get nailed in the demo's was funny as hell, and best of all we got to earn some bragging rights with the competitions we did against each other.
Brilliant experience, and we got to abuse the stag far more than we ever could have hoped!

I got a lot of worried questions when I said what had been planned, and there were a few trying to wimp out when we were at the hotel waiting to get the taxi's over, but once we got started everyone was loving it and it was the main conversation for the rest of the weekend. The video's were put on Facebook of the Stag being given a pummeling, and his "man points" have gone up a few notches from it!

100% recommend it for any Stag-Do's. Got to sweat out the booze from the night before, it picked up everyones energy levels, and the banter for the rest of the day was quality. There were bits we learnt that we'll always remember, and a few feuds from the night before got a chance to be settled in the grappling.

Cheers Marcus, you made it a great experience and I picked up all the credit from the boys for it!!!

"For sometime I have been thinking about doing a self defence class, one of those things I  knew it would be good to do but hadn't ever got round to it. When the opportunity arose to go on a women's self defence workshop with Marcus at Krav Maga Edinburgh I decided to take the plunge and book. I had no previous martial arts or self defence experience and to be honest I really wasn't sure what to expect.

Very quickly I realised that I come to right class - the session was informative but also relaxed. Marcus is clearly a very skilled practitioner but he is also a very good instructor. He put everyone in the group at ease, he explained carefully what we were doing and why. He brought a common sense to the subject alongside delivering the technical skills - a combination which will be essential to managing a real life situation.

It goes without saying that this is a serious subject and I definitely learned a lot but I also found it really enjoyable. I would have no hesitation in recommending this course to others"

It was an interesting and educational three hours. While I may not be combat-ready at this stage, it was an excellent prelude to further learning, and has inspired my curiosity to attend further classes. The self defence seminar certainly demonstrated that I would be able to defend myself if the situation called for it, and this has helped to tune my inner confidence. We also had a great laugh throughout the experience, so I would recommend it to anyone as either an introduction to self-defence skills, or as a top-up for those who have encountered this sort of thing before.

“Kick boxing was amazing fun, quality.  Got my brain concentrating, the dude was so helpful and supportive.  I learn a lot of things about kickboxing what I didn’t know before”

“The session when we were doing the kick boxing was really good.  I would like to do it again.”

I participated in a one-off 4 hour woman's self-defence course under the instruction of Marcus Houston. At first glance he appeared an unlikely ally for the feminist movement. However -throughout the day his supportive attitude and direct approach helped us to tackle our fears head on. A mixed ability class - even the most timid amongst us was able to demonstrate marked improvements in stance, attitude, assertiveness and confidence. Marcus is really switched on - he helped us to develop some seriously useful practical self-defence skills. His style of training would have benefitted me years ago - in general - and in my extensive travels across south east asia as a single woman.  I couldn't recommend this class more for all women

I came to combat ready to get fit and loose weight. I have never been one for gyms or keep up fitness routines but I come to combat ready 3 times a week and have noticed a real difference in myself. All the instructors are supportive in my goal and really push me 110%. I would recommend combat ready to anyone it has become a class I love to come to.

I started at Combat Ready a couple of months ago with no experience in any form of self-defence or martial arts and no idea of what to expect. The classes were welcoming with no pretensions or egos; regardless of training background or ability you’re encouraged to develop your skillset and work hard. The instructors are all highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what they do, and training in mixed ability classes mean you are also constantly learning from the other students.

Classes at Combat Ready not only offer excellent fitness training, but also teach techniques that can be used in practical application; every drill is related to its potential to be used in a real-life situation.  For anyone wanting to improve their physical fitness or learn practical ways of defending themselves, Combat Ready offers first class training in a friendly, encouraging environment.

Marcus put us all at ease very quickly with his relaxed demeanour.  He took us through what we could use as 'tools' and which areas to target on an attacker.  We were also given guidance on the kind of things that would make us less of a target in the first instance - and how to de-escalate a situation that could lead to violence.  I think this is a very useful and thought provoking starting point for anyone who has concerns about what they might do in the event of unwanted attention.  I am definitely keen to attend other classes to build on the basics that I have learnt.

If you're looking for the next "get fit quick" fad workout, then keep looking. If your looking for real results - whether your goals are increased fitness, fewer jiggles, bigger muscles, or all 3 - then read on. I started taking the kickboxing classes twice a week with Marcus a little over 2 months ago. The idea of learning something new, throwing a few kicks and punches, using my own bodyweight to get in shape, and being nowhere near the pulleys and gadgets you'd find at the gym all appealed to me. (I hate the gym. I can't convince myself to do endless reps on a machine slathered in someone else's sweat in a room full of strange people.)

Heading into the first class was slightly intimidating, but it turned out there was really nothing to worry about. Marcus kept it straight-forward and demonstrated moves for the class. There is a great balance of conditioning with bodyweight, kettlebells and freeweight exercises to start then getting into working on your kicks and punches.  Knowing myself to be both forgetful and uncoordinated, I was worried about keeping up with combinations but between Marcus and the other folks in the class, there's a really supportive atmosphere which puts up with having to show me repeated deomnstrations of the same thing. Don't get me wrong, Marcus isn't going to hold your hand and pull you through the class. If you want to get something out of it, he's going to push you to make sure you're putting everything you've got into it. I think that's what makes it a great class - it's good, honest, effective fitness training. So stop reading about getting fit - get out of your computer chair and come try out a kickboxing class.

Combat Ready provides a fantastic syllabus heavily focused on reality based martial arts and fitness. The classes are full of mixed ability, age, gender, shape and size, taught by patient instructors. You will build in levels of adaptability to your training, quickly learning which techniques work for your body type against different sorts of opponents in adrenaline charged situations.

If you are looking for a no-nonsense approach to self-defence and want to get fit doing it, this is the place for you!

I have been training at the Combat Ready Gym for just a few weeks and already I feel safer, stronger, fitter and more assertive than I did before.  Its nice being able to walk down the street at night without feeling threatened by every other passer by. Im smaller than most guys, but what I love about Krav Maga is size doesn't matter, its the speed and precision techniques were taught that do the damage rather than strength and muscle. I feel like I could actually use Krav Maga in a real life scenario, as opposed to other martial arts Ive tried previously which felt unpractical and unusable outside of training environment.

My daughter and I recently attended a 90 minute self defence personal training session with Marcus Houston from Krav Maga Edinburgh. The session was exactly what I wanted - for us both to learn basic techniques in being able to fend off an attack should it ever happen. Marcus gave us some great ideas of moves to use but also ways of diffusing and avoiding trouble in the first place.

I would highly recommend Combat Ready Gym to anyone. Marcus and his team provide a fantastic training programme by making the workouts hard but enjoyable! The atmosphere at the gym is extremely welcoming and supportive, especially to new members. The training has not only given me technical self defence skills but it has also improved my confidence hugely. I would definitely recommend the Tactical Edge and Krav Maga classes for anyone looking to learn ‘no nonsense’ self-defence!

During August 2012 I was invited to attend a training seminar in Japan for my martial art, iaido. Towards the end of the same month, after a few too many beers during the festival, a couple friends mentioned I was looking a little overweight (‘podgy’ was a particular term used), so I decided to fight back and get fit and lean. After all, I would be amongst the most junior grades invited to the training seminar, but what I lack in skill I wanted to make up for in fitness and longevity.

I started out by going for short runs, and in October joined Combat Ready’s kettlebell class. The philosophy of Marcus and the other trainers there really appealed to me: functional, whole body exercises at maximum intensity for the highest impact in the least amount of time. Given that I wanted to get fit and lose weight, kettlebells (the Russian Army gym machine of choice!) was the obvious choice.

After a few sessions it was clear that the approach was working, but I wanted even more rapid results, so asked Marcus if he would be able to help me reach my goals, specifically to get in tip top shape for my May Japan trip. A (literally) vomit inducing first session got me hooked, and in five short months Marcus has helped me build up all aspects of my physical fitness. My endurance is higher, my explosive strength is higher, I am able to do exercises I never dreamed would be possible just a few months ago (100kg squats, weighted dips and chin-ups), and at the same time the training sessions, allied to a sensible diet and a significant reduction in beer intake have allowed me to reduce my weight from 90kgs to 80kgs, but more importantly reduce my bodyfat percentage from around 30% to around 15%, meaning I have lost two stone of fat in around 7 months. I don’t do lots of training, but Marcus has allowed me to target the time I do have very effectively and get the results I wanted. Sitting on the eve of my trip I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in, and I’ve caught the bug. This is just the start of my transformation into a fit and healthy person. Marcus and Combat Ready have created an acolyte of me, and I can’t thank him enough for it!

Although I wanted to stay in shape, I was never a fan of mainstream gyms. When Combat Ready was recommended to me back at the start of 2013; I've never looked back. A couple of Krav Maga classes every week, with the occasional Kick Boxing class thrown in too, is exactly what I needed. The instructors are second to none, they push you physically and mentally. You're rewarded with an increase in self-confidence, physical ability and a greater awareness of your own surroundings. I work long, hard hours, and my time spent at Combat Ready is the only time that I fully manage to switch off and forget about work. It's my little bit of escapism.”
